I never say “LOL”

But I do say, “haha, heehee, heh heh”

Chris Choi
wrote yesterday about how much a farce saying “lol” is when you’re not
actually laughing out loud. Ironically, the other night I was
thinking the exact same thing. In fact, here’s how the epic story
went:

I was sitting at the computer and suddenly the idea dawned on me.

I turned to Lan and said “I just realized something. I never say LOL.”

“No, I mean it, I just say ‘haha’ and ‘heehee’, but I never use the word ‘lol’ for its meaning.”

Surely, a more epic story was never told.

Self Analysis

So this lead me to wonder– “Why am I this way? I say WTF, BRB and TTYL and several other Internet acronyms.”

And then epiphany hit me. I ONLY write acronyms of things that I
would actually say in real life. For example, when I leave a room
to take a shit, I say “Be right back!”, when I hang up on the phone
with someone, I say “Talk to you later!”. For the cases of
‘BRB’ and ‘WTF’, sometimes I just say the straight acronym in real life.

However, whenever someone says something funny, I NEVER say “OH MY GOD
LAUGHING OUT LOUD!!” I just laugh out loud. What’s really ironic
is that I really do make the “hehe” and “haha” noises when I’m talking
to people.

Other Internet slang that I would NEVER say because I never say it in
real life: IMHO [yeah, as if I’m humble], LMAO, ROFL, ROFLMAO, TTFN,
CPU [for ‘computer’, hello, a cpu is something totally different,
people!].

Which Internet acronyms, abbreviations and colloquialisms do you use? [Look ma, I’m semi-alliterate!]

THIS IS THE COOLEST THING
I’ve seen in years. Someone please be kind and get it for me! =P Just
kidding, I don’t even know where you’d buy it from. Link pilfered
from this site.

i prefer the full blown BHAHAHAHAHAHA, because that’s how i laugh. ha
if i’m not paying attention to an msn convo or whatever, i’ll just “lol” for the sake of saving myself some effort in reading in depth. yep, i’m a jerk.
i am a big fan of the TTYL though. ^^

i prefer “HAHAHAHAHA” because LOL assumes that you’re actually laughing out loud… when you’re not really. whereas HAHAHAHA can either be seen as laughing hystericaly out loud or internally. :-)
i sometimes use “omg” but not too often. but one that i frequent is BRB. :-)

brb….

scaryuncle said,

October 5, 2005 @ 11:43 am

Never been into the whole “lol” fad, usually more of a heh or a hahaha kinda guy. On occasion if something REALLY strikes me right, I’ll use a LMAO. But only when I really am in danger of loosing my balance from the force of the hilarity.
I’m also a pretty big proponent of STFU. It’s just so handy.

VortexInfinitum said,

if you watch pure pwnage, the main character jeremy always says “LOL” out loud. Not pronounced, like “el-oh-el” but “lol”. its hilarious to watch.and i prefer to use heh or muahaha. or bwahaha.

same here – i don’t use lol. i use haha or hehe depending on the hilariousity (i’m not sure if i made that word up or not) of the matter. hehe is more like a giggle whereas haha is more like real laughing.
afk is probably the lost acronym. when i use it, some people don’t even know what it means anymore. do u know what it stands for? you’ve been online for a while so i think you should

BurinB said,

i use most of them!sometimes i’ll talk to people and all they’ll say is “lol”. it makes me sad. very sad. it gives a new spin to “one sided conversation”. weird part is that i can do the EXACT same thing. uh oh, i’m a hypocrite!anyways, one of my peeves is when someone uses proper capitalization AND punctuations with the acronyms! like they are sentences! example? Lol. Rofl. Ttyl. Brb. Lmao. you get the point! ah, just notice the capital first letter and the period. or… am i just being nit-picky?

popplepea said,

Wow, that pocky thing is REALLY cute. It’s almost as ingenious as the chinese take out bag purses. Maybe even more. And I never say LOL either… or any of those other acronyms. Usually. Unless I’m really lazy, I usually spell out everything and sometimes even add a period at the end. I figure i want to keep my grammar intact, somewhat. =)

iam_juliE said,

October 5, 2005 @ 1:43 pm

I’m pretty much the same, actually. I probably haven’t used “lol” since I was, like, I dunno, 11. However, I do use ROFL when I see something deserving of it, instead of LOL. I don’t actually fall out of my chair and roll on the floor laughing, but I feel ROFL has more of an impact than plain old LOL. It’s like… “oh damn” vs. “oh darn.”
Other acronyms I frequently use are… OMG, WTF, and more often, OMGWTF, but only when being sarcastic. AFK I use more than BRB, because it’s more general, and sometimes I’m not right back, and I don’t want to be misleading.

urtoasted said,

October 5, 2005 @ 3:49 pm

I have a said story behind my “lol’s”. Nowadays when I type ‘lol’, or when I do really laugh out loud to myself, instead of thinkin of it as EL-OH-EL, I think of it as Lawl. Sometimes I will say “Lawl” to myself when I find something funny. So I guess I don’t lol, but in a way, I do lol if that makes any sense.

GoodSugars said,

October 5, 2005 @ 4:22 pm

I never really thought about it but I put ‘lol’ a lot when I’m not really laughing.  I use it to show that I think something is funny.  I also use ‘haha’ and ‘hehe’.  Anyhow…

Ssweet_dreemzZ said,

October 5, 2005 @ 4:28 pm

I say ‘lol’ and most of the other ones like ‘brb,’ ‘ttyl’ ‘g2g’ and ‘btw.’ For ‘lol,’ though, a friend of mine has slipped and said, ‘lol’ outloud as in lawl like it was a word. =P

Tsunaki36 said,

i never say the l-word either. we are a rare breed!and whatever happened to lan?

aradne said,

October 5, 2005 @ 4:41 pm

I say lol, but initially I had to force myself too. Other than that I just type things out. Once in a great while I might say ROFL, or something. But I do use the emoticons, because they’re the smoot. I text my sister via cellphone a lot, and even then I type out ‘you’ and things. It’s partially because that’s who I am, and partially because she doesn’t even know what ‘brb’ means. Though I must admit, I only know basic ‘net abbreviations. ‘Pwned’, ‘IMHO’, ‘SWTA’, and many others… Well, I couldn’t tell you what they mean. Even ‘ryc’, I just figured out the other day. (something to the effect of ‘re: your comment’) Before that, I thought there was some user named ryc whom everyone wished to speak with. I’m such a dork sometimes. /essay

I use hahahha most of the time. And like you, it’s because I actually say it in real life. I read another blog a while ago about this same subject matter. But her opinion was the opposite- that hahah and hehehe are just lame versions of lol.
I agree with you though. LOL- should only be used in cases of severe laughter. PS- a tanuki is an indigenous animal to Japan, similar to the raccoon, but different and with huge testicles- yes- i said testicles. There are a lot of myths about them- like they like to drink sake and scare travelers.(sorry for the long ass comment)

So when I say it, sometimes I’m laughing, but mostly not. When I am laughing, I say “haha” or really laughing, “AHAAHAHAHAAHAHEARHEARNEuhtselitseltihwqe!O!J!>!!!!!i#$WY#!~”
Or some such thing.

am i the only one that says..
jic [just in case] bc/cuz [because], igg[i gotta go] ho[hold on] jw[just wondering].. etc. etc..
i only use them bc i get too lazy to type the rest.. etc. etc. ‘nd i never use lol. it sounds really weird, like nobody says lol in real life. nobody laughs while they are talking to you and is all like ‘laughing out loud’ after you tell a joke. cuz if anybody did do that, it would be like, yeah, i can see that your laughing out loud. why are you telling me when its so obvious? so yeah, i just go hah, or haha cuz it makes more sense.

haha, i’m on a featured-xanga-browsing roll today!
However, whenever someone says something funny, I NEVER say “OH MY GOD LAUGHING OUT LOUD!!”
XD how true. i’ve used ROFL before, but i was actually rolling on the floor laughing. so i had an excuse.
there’s even an icon on this topic.. if only i could find it.
i use LOL when i have nothing else to say. haha. and sometimes i say it out loud to my friends.
ohman, i’m strange. XD

Wow. Nice Drawing. I actually say lol as a word and WTC(in letter form).
I only say lol when I don’t laugh at it.

I once said, “We will bury you,” and I got into trouble with it. Of course we will not bury you with a shovel. Your own working class will bury you…
