I always think, “I can do that…”

But if that’s the case, then, why haven’t I done it?

After reading a great book, I always think, “I could do this, I could write a book.”

After eating a great dish at a restaurant I think, “This would be easy to cook”

When I see clothes I like, knit items that are cute, most crafty things, I think … “I could make that.”

And it’s true. I’ve written a novella length story, so I know I
could do more. I cook great dishes all the time. I
even make my own clothes sometimes, and knit. Once I wanted to
make a print for a shirt, so I learned how to create stencils and roll
paint I did it.

I bake cookies and cakes. I even learned how to decorate cakes the way you see them do it on TV.

… But I’ve never, ever, through all my half-hearted trying, been able to hit the type of quality that I seek within myself.

From myself I expected the next great American novel.

I expected to surpass the Iron Chefs on my first try.

I want to make clothes people only dream of.

I want to make cakes and bake cookies the way they do on Food Network challenges.

I want to knit things that make publishers scramble to have the rights to the patterns.

…And when I’m working feverishly on whatever it is I may be obsessed
with at the time… I think, yes, this might be my calling..I might be
able to become an expert at this!…. I lose interest and move onto
something new.

How do people get that spark, that
resolve that makes them work so hard at one thing and become so amazing
at one thing that everyone acknowledges their talent? Where does
it come from… and how do I get it for myself?

On another note… I just started writing the next Great American Novel, so y’all better watch yourselves.

it’s called passion.  and passion comes from finding one’s purpose.

Good luck with the novella. For now, I’ll be happy to just keep weightlifting every other day and hopefully lose some weight and I’m not going to think of trying to outlift the Governator.

You have to find something that gives you joy and satisfaction from the result!  Good luck with the writing!

wait…but i’m writing the next great novel. oh, ok, you can write the next great AMERICAN novel. I won’t settle until i’ve written a novel that will make everyone in the world want to learn english just to read it. ;)

I think the “creativity” curve begins to plateau as we become more focused on a specific area. So switching to new uncharted territory keeps things interesting. know whadda mean?

because then everyone would be scarily superhuman and there’s no one to admire/emulate anymore and we’d lose all purprose. what else would you want?
the want is good enough fuel to keep going. i’ll be looking for your great american novel on ap english curriculums =)

i read a japanese comic book when i was 13. the comic book was a popular title written by an 11 years old girl who got really famous for writing the title at her age. i thought the same “im gonna write a comic book. this is so easy blah blah if a 11 years old can do, i can too”.
anyway, i was serious about that and started my first comic masterpieces. it took mi 2 years and 3 masterpieces later that my comic was ever published. and i was 15 when i first see my comic on newspaper. that wasnt as much a shock as 11 year olds would but hey, that’s how one started!!! if you never give up that idea, start on it and it would get you somewhere.

i enjoy writing…but it’s not something that can be forced
i realized that writing is something that fulfills me when i’m feeling…well, empty.
maybe we don’t always NEED something to occupy our time if we’re fulfilled

yeah but do you really want that spark? Because it seems like a lot of the time when a person has an extreme talent for an area, it becomes their obcession, their life. I mean I know where you’re coming from, but then again maybe you’d rather be more well rounded, enjoy moderate success in many areas of your life. Not just your career, but relationships. so yeah you were a random xanga thing on the homepage. I like your page and like your posts, what I’ve read anyway. Subscriber 4 Life!!!!! j/k. kt

what you think is good may not be good. you have to let a bunch of other people see it and give you their reactions. though it might not be true for you, most people tend to over-estimate their abilities. it’s easy to think that you could create something once you see it created (that’s why they say hindsight is 20/20) but it’s much harder to create it beforehand. that’s not to say you don’t have skills, but…most artists get props for a reason…and it’s not because most of us could have done what they did.

dont know if you heard this before, “jack of all trades, but master of nothing”
guess just need to find that spark in our lives

summerXnign said,

it’s perseverance, honey.i actually know a bunch of people whose IQ already surpassed 180 at the tender age of ten, and even among these geniuses, only those who persevered to master a certain field became the masters. And they never stop perfecting their skills. Those amazingly talented people you see on TV and read about in books and magazines, they also have worked long and hard to become what they are. No one can succeed with just one try; your talent may “reveal” itself on your first try, but you can’t create a masterpiece with just one go.Keep trying.

let those so called experts master their one thing in life. mastering one thing is great- for them.what about other aspects of their lives? it suffers.jack of all trades is a master of many things.. contrary to civicracer’s belief.arete- greek for excellence. excellence in all things, not just one thing.that, in itself, is true mastery.i hope you understand.

I’ll tell U how some people gets the “spark”…by having someone else tell them “you can’t do it.”  Then the spark happens and the rest is history.
