tutting

I guess most people wouldn’t know this, since I never post about it, but recently I’ve become really interested in a dance form called tutting. It originated from popping and is considered a type of popping. So anyhow, a few weeks back I got bored and created a video of me tutting as a progress report for my master. I thought some people might actually be interested in seeing what I do in my day-to-day life. :) So here it is. :D

wow that’s pretty hot, you flow really well how long have you been doing this? I wouldn’t consider it a form of popping but instead deprived from locking instead since it’s more of an agility thing rather than wow that’s pretty hot. If you’re interested in bboys check out this clip I made

Great stuff, where would you go to learn this? And it’s all self-choreographed I bet =)

Nice job; is that related to the 80s dance ‘the robot’? Looks very much like it.

& of course, you looked good doing it, so I suspect that helped too. *wink*

Was cool seeing you @ the UCI All Night thing tonight; was annoyed when they made me stop roping, but hey, I’ll live. And since I’m horribly bad at it, perhaps it wasn’t such a bad thing….? Ngh.

Anyway, awesome vid & awesome moves.

It’s weird seeing an amateur video on popping. I don’t go out to rave scenes or clubs, so I don’t see too much popping. But I prefer liquid, but looking at you, I think I need some practice.

But what you do, looks like a routine that you must practice every evening and morning. Then it got me thinking… well, our grandparents prolly exercise tai chi every morning too, so this is like the modern Asian-American’s version of Tai Chi! But it’s called Tut Ting! Okay I’m just being a dork.

Ugh, forgive me for being ignorant…I didn’t know the difference between popping, liquid, and funk styles.

Tutting is NOT a form of locking. Locking has it’s own history. It was created by Don Cambellock– a very nice man and a great teacher. It’s a very fun funk dance but has nothing to do with precise muscle control like the "popping" styles.

Under the very general term "popping",includes waving, ticking, animation, boogooloo, popping, gliding, boppin, robotin, and a myriad of other styles. Notice not all of them are like pantomining stuff. Most share the characteristic of having precise muscle control. So Kim would be considered to be popping, although a lot of old skoolers would scratch their heads and would say she is tutting, which is a more precise term. most dancers combine everything together.

wow, you do it so well. seeing that clip makes me miss everything about raving. esp. the music and drugs. btw … i love your new layout … so clean, it kind of reminds me of your old layout for your journal. im gonna miss that row of pictures that you had on your last layout though … i talked to you once about the possibilities of you making a website for my company and as of right now i think we can afford you by mid-April … hope to talk to you soon about it, bye~

Hey that was really good. I’d never heard of tutting and that was interesting!

Glen said,

Let’s see. First off, you could stand to smile more while you dance. Second off, your entire lower half of your body is frozen while you’re tutting. Other than that, remember to keep your arms straight and parallel to the ground, otherwise it looks dirty. Good stuff all in all, I guess. Peace.

Glen said,

Personally, I like it when clips play the actual music that the person is dancing too, rather than a montage. That way you can also tell how well they’re hitting those beats.

That was probably one of the greatest fucking things I have seen. I may not know art but I know what I like, and that was fucking amazing. The entire thing was watched with my mouth open in awe. I have no reason to lie, that was fucking (tight)amazing!( I havent really used the word tight before), stepping down.

kim said,

:P thanks glen, yeah I know I’m not that great yet, I’ve only been doing this for a few months… ^_~ HmMmm… My webcam doesn’t have sound though. I wish I could post one with the real music. :T

What’s wrong w/ not smiling?? ;_;

I thought that video was pretty cool. Where did you learn tutting from? And can you tell us more about where it started from?

You looked like you really knew what you were doing and I thought it was really cool to watch.

And I guess smiling could help, but I didn’t mind. It just looked like you were concentrating real hard =). Which is always cool ^_^.

markparadox said,

hallo! Nice vid. Your pretty cute. I wouldn’t worry about not smiling, I think it gives it a different style on ya that makes it more captivating. It’s also pretty cool to try and mix ‘n match different styles. =)

Glen said,

March 5, 2002 @ 9:19 am

Hey, don’t take it personally, Kim. I think you’re off to a good start, I’m just trying to give you some pointers to improve upon. It’s important to smile becase nobody likes a dancer with a thug-mug. Let me reiterate, you’re doing well, these are just some tips.

What webcam do you have? Mine is the Intel PC Camera Pro, but I can’t use it for 30 seconds without it freezing on me.

shoz said,

bout 30 seconds into your vid i see some very weak movements. you seem secure in what youre doing, but the movements are very labored. tutting shouldnt be labored as it seems there, it should look like the movements are meant to go there.

about 1:33 into the video, the fingerwalking is a bit… eh.

youre good kim, keep it up. better than i am. but not better than i used to be ;P
