“I’m mediocre.”
Or average. Or normal.

No
matter how you say it, it’s hard to admit. Most of the people in this
world fall into a certain range. Average looks, average smarts,
average height, average build. In fact, unless you’re
within the top 12.5% or bottom 12.5% of the curve in something, I’d
consider you in the “average” range.

… But you rarely see
anyone admitting that nowadays. For example, when you go into an
interview, you’re not the average joe — you’re better, you’re
superior, you’re even spectacular. –In reality, you’re maybe
decent. Better than most but not in the top percent.

I know I don’t like to be mediocre..

It’s the same for me.

I
like to think that I’m smart — I even considered joining Mensa for a
while. Until I realized that if I joined that society I’d only be
of average intelligence among those peers. That’s when I thought
— who wants to put up with a bunch of stuck-up intellectuals anyway?

But
I didn’t join mostly because once I joined, I’d only be mediocre.
I wouldn’t be at the top. I don’t like to admit that there
are tons of people out there that are more intelligent than
me. Of course I know they exist, I just don’t want to know
about it.

I like to think that I’m above-average in looks — I even had a short [VERY EMBARRASSING :)] stint with modeling [TWO,
in fact]. Deep down I know, though, that I’m not in the top
ranks… I’m pretty confident I’m not in the bottom ranks… But, as I
won’t wow you with my looks, I’m definitely mediocre.

So what do
I do? I delve myself into a land that is filled with other souls more
mediocre than mine and try to stand out in any way I can.

In the end, I need to feel superior.

How it works in society

That’s probably why blogs are so popular. I mean, with whatever
category in which you think you’re above average at you can show it
off. Hot bod? Pictures. Sexy? Pictures. Intelligent?
Write your heart out about it. Posture about how intelligent you
are. Use big words. woooo.

And people who have less than you in whatever you decide to show off
about will follow you around because they acknowlege that you are
better than them.

Regardless, in the end it doesn’t matter… Even if you are better than some or even most, you’re still likely to fall into the mediocre range.

It hurts to say it!… but it’s true.

I’m mediocre…. And more likely than not, so are you!

Where is it hardest for you to admit your mediocrity? Looks? Intelligence? Physique?

Intelligence.  I hate feeling stupid or at least stupid-ER than I thought I was…  Body you can work out and looks you can hide or call it “unique” but feeling mediocre in intelligence, although there are multiple ways of defining it, is the worst of it all.

I think the hardest for someone to accept that they are not “all that” is in the transition from high school to universities.  Generally, high school are smaller (population-wise) than universities and if you were hot, popular, smart, etc…you will probably be neglected in a university.  If you think you are hot and smart…just stop and take a look around you!  There are lots of those hot girls next to you!  So, i think personality is something you can show off and tell ppl who you really are!  (this is my second time writing this comment…so it is not all that well thought out! My first comment didnt post!) =(

xanga gives readers the illusion that the lives of the people they are reading about is a life they wish they had instead, but just like you said, we’re all really only…average.
we have our pros and we have our cons, our good times and our bad. i don’t wanna seem cocky but i think that some of my readers think that i am living the better life, but readers seem to mistaken my writings (or pictures) with my real life which is as normal as any other person’s. it’s how we writers perceive and blog about ourselves that others really envy, not our offline daily lives filled with the usual trials, temptations, fun, happiness and sadness.
yes, we’re most likely all mediocre.

i totally agree with you Kim, that everyone wants to feel superior to people around them.  students always compare their grades & activities to someone worse, never to someone better.  bloggers always make themselves centers of universe and bask in the glory of people commenting on how hot/smart/talented they are.
personally, i’m not afraid to admit mediocrity (such as appearance) or even inferiority (such as financial/social status), because i know i have superiority (such as artistic skills) as well.

Personally, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with mediocrity.  With mediocrity there will always be someone out there that is even more mediocre than you are…and that person has someone else…and so on and so on.  Then again, bad things come along with being superior, as well!  What are some examples of that?  I have no idea, but I’m sure there are some out there.  My brain’s just a bit too lazy right now to list any of them.  Do I have any clue what I’m talking about?  Of course not.  I’m just mediocre like that~!  I think my laziness draws out my mediocrity the most in all categories. That’s what college is all about, suddenly everyone is mediocre and it’s a huge competition on who’s the greatest. My peers (mostly bio majors like myself) love to make themselves feel smarter and better than everyone by bragging about test scores. I always score average, so I just hide in the shadows and don’t partake in their glorifying.

Last year (my freshman year in college) I found out that I’m not THAT smart. Makes me wish I just went to work in a factory. :PThe hardest spot for me to admit mediocrity?Individualism. I try very hard to stand out in a crowd. Most of the time I fail. (I blame it on the size of the crowd, though!)

Everyone is what they make of themselves: Whether or not, they’re mediocror good/bad looking, have above/below intelligence or if they’re fat/skinny or even toned. Whether if you’re above or below average is dependant upon you and your abilities… Below average doesn’t mean that you’re any less of a human being, above average doesn’t prove that you’re anymore then them: Hence, what it does mean, is based on human categorizing and statistics, you’re more capable.. But according to God, we’re all equals. For example, A smart person, would make millions in thier job, while a poor man would make about $5 begging. What difference would it make? Is either of them less of a human being? Is anyone of them going to be able to fly away up into the heavan while the other sinks into hell? Nothing different or out of the ordinary will change… It’s only mankind that differentiate between the rich and the poor, the good looking and the ugly, the smart and the handicap, or the paupper and the prince.. It’s only perception that differentiate between two categorization of people… If you take away the wealth, the beauty and fame, we’re all the same.. We’re all just God’s creation…. Sorry for the long note, but I found your entry to be a good topic and very subjective… take care..

I wrote a paper on fear recently, and while most of it was fictional, I wrote on one thing that was true; being inferior. How can the average person lead a great life?If everyone led great lives then we’d all be, on average, be great people.Lost my train of thought.Anyways, I basically want to walk around knowing I could take down any man that stood in my way.Among the average highschool I suppose I’ve attainted that feeling through the things I’ve done, but what about the exceptional highschoolers? Mediocrity is what a majority of us fall into. I find myself falling into the middle category of looks, intelligence, and physique. However, it is this level of mediocrity that creates a drive for me to strive to reach that higher echelon of social acceptance. I purchase nice clothing to improve my looks. I read and write as much as possible to improve my knowledge. I work out and play tennis to improve on my physique. I am happy where I am. Mediocrity is not so bad because it is full of randomness. At the very least, I have something to look up to. If I was ever on top, then I would most likely look down on people which grants me no pleasure. Eh, I am mediocre and I accept it.

eh…i think mediocre may be too harsh of a word for me.  looks…i’m average.  i got a cute face, but that’s basically it.  i was born with the physique genes of my grandfather.  skinny.  intelligence, i would say i’m def. above average..if not in some elite percentage.  i’m not mensa, top of MIT, smart…and i know the world is full of smarter people.  but I’m not mediocre in that sense.  talent wise, i’m a jack of all trades.  not excellent in any one thing…but i know a little in everything.  music, art, performance, comedy, etc.

KingAmongDorks said,

Honestly, I’ve admitted to myself that I’m average time after time in so many aspects of my life, other than my intellect. I know I sound totally full of it, but I’ve gone through gifted programs and such so far in my life that I was basically raised to get good grades and such, but I guess that goes for every other Asian as well. But what I have in my head is what contradicts the rest of me. I’m not good looking, if anything, a bit on the ugly side since I’m so skinny. I’m not tall, but I’m not really short (maybe a little.) And well my looks are well, probably a bit on my bad side too, since I don’t do my hair or anything, choose to wear glasses, and have bags under my eyes most of the time due to my lack of sleep from all my homework and such. What I know I’m really really good at is at procrastination, to do homework like at 4 in the morning. But I’m working on change that.

KingAmongDorks said,

Well it’s admitting you’re less than what you strive to be. You try so hard to be something, yet no matter how hard you try, you can never measure up to someone else. Admitting you have flaws is a hard thing to do. I mean, a person may have a whole life in mind and then recall that they can’t be what they dreamed of being and they lose motivation. By considering yourself “above average” or “not mediocre” you are pretending that you are special and are different from everyone else, you believe that there is at least ONE talent no other person possesses, which you do. That is probobly the reason why people dress a certain way, and listen to a certain music, so they can be unique. In essence we are all the same, and who really wants to be the person they loathe?
P.S.
I think your modeling pictures are adorable

i don’t believe there’s anyone who’s SUPERIOR, it’s just comparison.
Mediocre….in terms of achievement…is important…

i think my physique is above average.  and then i go to the gym and feel mediocre or below sometimes.  but its funny how people who are considered the best at something are really not the best.  there is always someone in the world that is better than somebody else no matter what it is.

I believed I was average..until I guess..luck happen. I feel superior now to anyone. I know I shouldn’t feel this way but I’m just in this stage in my life where..I know whatever I do will be success. Sometimes it’s a good thing to have confidence. =)

i’d like to think i’m above average in almost everything. of course, there will always be people who are better than me at things, but i’m also better than a lot of people in other stuff. i don’t get off on feeling superior to people. i think that everyone has their strengths and weaknesses.

Theres nothing wrong with being normal.  Im normal and Im almost 100% happy.  And Im almost sure thats the normal thing to say cauz no normal person is ever 100% happy!
Ya know?

Lizai said,

For me, it’s probably either intelligence or musical ability. I also don’t like to admit to my friends’ mediocrity.
It’s all the fault of this “you’re a special person” stuff they teach you! I blame it on that, instead of my own foolish pride! :P
Yay projecting. :)

I would have to classify those generalizations with age groups. While perhaps to a 13-18 year old, Looks are what they care about most. While in the older folks Intelligence and Physique is key.

I`d never put myself over anyone, but I do consider myself above bit above average in the looks, and intelligence (as I hope most people would)

There’s no such thing as mediocrity. You don’t live in an orwellian society where everybody is treated exactly the same as everyone else and there is nothing anybody could do about it. You live in a world where if you don’t like something, chances are you can change it.

physique…..but honestly, i dont really care about it most of the time. think of it this way. everyone  should think of others as better than themselves, therefore you think so and so, is better than you, but on the other hand they think that your better than them, its a lovely circle that could definitly change a lot of how the world thinks, acts and treats people, and overall it would be a better place.in some area or another everyone is better than you and you are better than them they differ and make it equal.
