Here’s one I can’t stand. Granted, since I hold a high rank on the Grammar Police Force (GPF), I’m familiar with the common crimes. In this particular instance, however, I’m referring to the usage of the word “momento” when the correct word is “memento”. There is no such word as “momento” in English. It’s a Spanish word, yes, but the English word meaning “A reminder of the past; a keepsake” is “memento” and is not even pronounced the same way as “momento”. There’s that movie, Memento, and after seeing the title plastered about miscellaneous marquees and ads you’d think some people at least would get this right– but almost every person I’ve heard referring even to the movie itself calls it “Momento”.The funny thing is, I was reading a Tom Robbins book today, and if you know anything about Tom Robbins (who frequently goes on extensive rants about language and *its* correct usage in his books) you’ll know why *it’s* doubly strange and a little disconcerting that the same error I talked about above appears in Still Life with Woodpecker at the beginning of Chapter 45. The absolutely judgemental side of me, has several!!!  Lets list a few shall we?: hmm, people that abvreviate everything in their xanga!-especially when they misspell them on purpose as a means to sound more “ghetto.”   This whole “emo” thing….its a MUSIC GENRE!!!…please kids, if you claim to not conform, dont all make sure you dress the same, do your hair the same, where girls clothing if you are male, and wear intensionally “depressing” makeup!  Please.   I also just really hate ignorant people, no matter what the topic. So many people seem to be intentionally mis-spelling words and others seem to have no clue as to the proper usage.  Barring a typographical error, there is really no excuse for such rudeness.
