“Asian” Time:
Why the hell are Asian people always late?

Dear Friends,

So I
know I have a lot of non-Asian readers out there, and I know I write
about Asian things a lot because that’s what I know. For you people
without experience with Asians, take this as a learning experience.

For people who are around Asian people a lot… take this as a rant.

With Love,
Kim

“Asian Time” etymology explored

Alright, so I’ve heard it said in so many different ways, “Asian
Time” , “Korean Time, “Filipino Time”… and it all refers to the same
thing…

General Definition:
Asian Time :
The state of being perpetually late in a manner that is past what is considered “fashionably” late.

Origin:
I like to call it Asian time because
sometimes it seems as if they would be on time [or, gasp, REALLY
EARLY], if their clock was actually set in the standard time in Asia.

Ways to deal with people in “Asian Time”

Some people I know are stuck in Asia more than others. For
example, if I make reservations for something at 9pm, certain people
get told to meet at 8pm and are told the truth about the reservation
time, while others are told to meet at 7pm and that the reservation
time is at 8.

Though occasionally this can cause confusion, in the long run, it
truly helps get everybody in the same place at the same time [if you
happen to know the habitually late].

“Probing” Questions

Do you know anyone who’s stuck in Asian time?

What other euphemisms do you use for people who are perpetually late?

Ha, my mother.
Whenever she is getting ready and asks what time it is, I give her a time closer to the date she needs to be in the certain place so she hurrys up [for once].

asian ppl are ALWAYS late it’s a given. we know for a fact that when we say we’re leaving at 11 we’re actually leaving at 12. and etc… hahahahah it’s so sad. i try not to so i always get ready WAYYYYY too ahead of time so i can sit, wait, make other ppl feel bad that i’m already ready and so that maybe we’ll leave before 11:30 instead of 12… hahahahaha – but i’m DEFINITELY guilty of asian time sometimes

When I’m in a rush, my mother all of a sudden finds millions of things that she hasn’t done yet. And decides to do it then. Maybe Asians are easily distracted? Or do they just need to do some “work” before they leave the house… make sure they look presentable?I call it rubber band time… where you stretch it out and then rush your little asian butt around madly when it’s near time to go.

ibizajb said,

aradne said,

My mother and brother are always told half an hour earlier than what the true time is.In most S. American countries, it’s entirely normal to be 45 minutes late. :)

JoyCaDEeZy said,

February 7, 2006 @ 6:39 pm

I believe that for social gatherings people usually arrive late because they lack the social skills necessary to have a good time without a crowd. Or people want to seem as if they had better things to do before, or that they are mr./ms. popular and have prior obligations that made them late. Obviously people sometimes have valid reasons for being late, but when it comes to a professional setting, there is no excuse. I personally think that being late is irresponsible. It shows that an individual is unprepared.

activeAmygdala said,

CPT
Colored People Time
asians arent the only ones who seem to have difficulty meet at the designated time
although, i’m sure it would be pointless for me to point out that it really depends on the individual

Here in the UK we use BMT (black mans timing) since we joke that Black people are perpetually late. Funnily enough all the asians I know are incredibly punctual!

Kevin72 said,

February 7, 2006 @ 9:42 pm

I grew up with “Jewish Standard Time”, which means show up late for a party, so that you’re not the first person there. I’ve heard Blacks talk about “Black standard time” as well. Me, I have a distinct inability to be late for anything, it’s almost like I’m preprogrammed or hypnotized by my spirit guides to do whatever it takes to be at the right place at the right time. This is even more true for appointments and plans made far, far in advance. The positive thing to this, besides being on time is that I also am somewhat psychic and never have problems with any kind of travelling, and I have been blessed with having been able to travel a lot.

isn’t it sad that when you plan anything.. you always have to consider asian time? haha. that’s when you start lying to your friends… be there at 6 when you really mean 8… and the one or two people who actually show up at 6 end up waiting hours for everyone else to come. haha. =) hope all is well!

yay, you mentioned filipino time.
i really don’t know, kim, because whenever this topic comes up, my asian friends will agree, and then my african american and carribean bredren will say that they’re even later, and the latinos say no no, they’re the latest of them all, then the blasted indians, not to be outdone, say they’re so late they actually accomodate such lateness by announcing events that start at 4am. the day before.
only the white folk are left out of this dilemma. i think. ..or wait, maybe it’s because we don’t care if they show up or not. =P
