I don’t want to die young…

But I don’t want to die old, either.

I have Peter Pan complex. If I could become Peter Pan and the
world could become my NeverNeverland, I would gladly embrace the
opportunity.

As scary as dying sounds, it seems like dying young holds so much more
glory than dying old. I mean, look at Kurt Cobain… Aaliyah…
even Left Eye. It seems like if you die young, the mistakes you
make through life become badges of honor, instead of stains on your
distant past.

I had a friend in 8th grade that told me that he didn’t plan on living
past 25, because if he didn’t make anything of himself by 25 he’d want
to die, and if he did make anything of himself he’d want to die so that
he would make a point. (I hung out with a morbid bunch back
then.) At the time, it seemed kind of like an appealing idea.

That thought has always stayed with me because I have it written down in one of my journals.

I’m 22 now, and 25 seems to be looming really close.

I wonder how I’ll feel about being old then?

Do you think it’s better to die young in glory or die old quietly?

It’s just fucking stupid to glamourize those people’s deaths, to erase the very thing that makes them important to humanity – their fallability. Glory is overrated.

definitely old.  who cares what people remember of me or what they think.  pshh.  it’s my life and life is good.  so i’ll take some more please.  dying later is so much better than dying sooner.
22! you should not be thinking of death.  and with lifespans increasing, 25 is not the cut-off point for when you should be “making something of yourself”

I don’t wanna die old because in my…old is around the high 90’s or low 100’s.  Typically, on my dad sides, people die VERY late!  I think the main reason why I don’t wanna die old is cause I’ll be very senile and crazy at that point.   Ugh, I think my dad is getting to the senile point already….  *shivers*  I’d rather die than have anything suffer through dealing with me in that state.  So, in my case, it’s either get murdered young or die old and senile.  I don’t wanna get into the murdered part…

i’m past 25 and haven’t done anything with life yet.  i won’t think about dying at least until i’m a famous artist.  then again, if i become a famous artist anytime soon, i’d want to spend the rest of my lifetime contributing in that regard.  you only get one chance at life (yeah very non-religious) so make the most out of it.

If i died young, commiting suicide then I wouldnt have a clue what the next day or year would have instore for me…but if i left my life to die old, then i would be miserable and in pain, remembering the ridicule and sufferings of my life…and the fist fights that i’ve never gotten to have….but then again dying old is what i chose and i shall stick to it.

for a couple weeks, maybe.
then everyone will forget.
when you die old, at least you’ll be satisfied. by then, you’ll know more about life. you’ll have more experience. you would have lived more life. i mean, you would probably have kids and grandkids
and you would change the future in that small way. because of you having 2 kids, each of them can have 2 kids and all because of you thats 6 people that wouldnt be there. and those six people would change and help out other people
and your legacy would live on.
i dont know.

Wow, the topic that you have posted has very powerful effects on people.. Death is an inevitable destination. Your question on dying young in glory or dying old quietly.. I don’t think that it’s really up to us to decide.. Everyone’s life is destined to be one way or the other, if we dies young, we leave marks in the lives of those to respect us. We would’ve lived life on the run and constantly striving for a better tomorrw.. If we die old peacefully, than we would’ve lived our life with substantial happiness, but we never get to experience the thrills of life.. So I don’t know whether dying young is good or if dying old is good.. It’s all up to the individual.. Personally, I’d rather not think about it and just live life…

option # 3. die old with glory. heh

s1ms said,

October 4, 2005 @ 7:01 pm

But is the glory really there?
If we die young the glory is among whom? The young.
Try dying old. You get glory, but instead among the old.
Lead a longer life, and most likely lead a more successful life. Are the young truly experienced enough to decide what’s glorious or not in these terms? If age decides glory, and the proper age is the younger one, then the judges on this need to be removed.
I say die old and die happy. Who cares what other people think anyways?
Stupid question. We all do. But die in your own glory, your own success and happiness, then die well, no matter what the age.
It just seems more likely to happen when we’ve had the experience to create a wellspent life.

I’m not sure I get it. what glory? if you die young, you’re a t-shirt. you’ve left nothing behind–some really exceptional people in show-business might leave a legacy, but we’re not singers or actors or celebrity. but what about all of that potential? gone. and with them, if they die young, people just try to “replace” them. at 25 you haven’t even started living yet, in my opinion. I just turned 25. life is becoming more interesting and changes are all over the place. older people tell me that “old” is like 60yrs. that means if you killed yourself or died at 25, you just butt-fucked yourself out of 35 yrs of life. I seriously feel that in even 5yrs my world-view and life-view could change completely. don’t you think that at 30 you could be different?
at least if you die old, you may have a family that survives you if nothing else. and you gave it a good run. learned a lot, saw a lot, did a lot. I’d rather see what happens.

ppl will forget you eventually anyway.  i don’t think anybody’s going to care who Aaliya was 5 or 10 years from now.

die old in glory, like when you’re really old, go into a burning building and save a baby or something. better yet, save TWO babies. then pass out from smoke inhalation. next thing you know, there’ll be a street named “shi street”, or “kim road” or “nguyen square”. finally, they’ll name stuff after non-white people… or numbers…

I want to die at the age of 31.. that way I have lived enough of my life to be happy.. but so I don’t have to be old.
I really REALLY do not want to get old.

scaryuncle said,

I don’t plan on fading out when I get old. I can’t WAIT to be a geezer. Gonna get a nice, sturdy rocking chair, a porch with a view, and a shotgun to menace the kids wandering on my lawn looking to get their frisbees back. I’m going to yell at people I disagree with and they’ll have to politely listen to me because I’m old. I’m going to steal stuff and if I get caught I’m going to cry and pretend I don’t know what’s going on. I am going to demand every single Seniors discount that exists and many that don’t.
Life starts at 65.

True dying old, you would reflect upon your old mistakes, but life is to be cherished and lived to the fullest. One’s life can’t be full of mistakes and no happiness. Do as much as you can because there are many people that change history when they’re well past 25. And uh..Random props. o.o

When the young die their mistakes are ignored, not turned into badges.  People would rather not see the evil in one they’re honoring, and this holds even further true for the young.  To die old and to die gloriously aren’t mutually exclusive concepts.  You’re given glory throughout your life, not just at death.
If one is to die at all, I’d rather it be in a picturesque and cliche way.  Little ceremony, few attendees, no commotion.  Just the knowledge that my life was full with what I was supposed to be and that I died no less than what I should be.
heh.  The chance that you’ll get to the end of this massive string of comments is unlikely, but I’ll hope.
And after reading over that it seems way too wordy.  Sorry.  I get caught up in the moment sometimes.

Heh. I don’t plan on living past 29. I couldn’t stand really growing old. For that reason, I plan on living life to the fullest, even if that involves being reckless, and I’m not getting married or having kids.

I’d die when i felt that i did everything that i ever wanted to do so i guess whenever that is… if you think thinking about death at 22 is too young i’m 13 and thinking about it and i always scare myself afterwards because i’m always thinking about what happens after you die… i don’t think you can think let alone remember anything about your life and it kinda scares me to think about that but i guess if i don’t get into a n accedent then i won’t have to worry about it for a while

I’m with you. It’s a hard decision, but I do feel compelled to point out that not everyone that dies young has an impact on society as a whole. At least no more of an impact than those who die old. Especially if they aren’t famous. Then the only ones effected are your friends/family/enemies. And those people would be effected whether you passed young or old. Of course, I’ve been watching my grandmother age quickly over the last few years and suffer with Alzheimer’s. I don’t really think I want to go through that either. It’s a tough decision, one I’m glad I don’t necessarily have to make.
P.S. Turning 25 isn’t so bad, at least not after the initial shock of it!

There is so much to do in life, why would anyone chose to die young?
I don’t want to pick an age to die, I want to be surprised. I’ll be trying to live my life to the fullest till then. It would be cool to be 95 and still driving and taking walks etc. Just to be able to live that long would be cool.

Lionsgrrr1 said,

It’s better to have lived a long full life with plenty of memories you silly child. What the hell does “die young in glory” mean anyway? That’s such bullshit. There are so many experiences to have. Life is a vessel, and I want the BIG GULP.

foxxie_13042 said,

I THINK THAT NO MATTER WHEN YOU DIE IT’S ALL THE SAME. IT’S GODS CHOICE, AND HE CAN SEE ALL YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS, EVEN THE LITTLE ONES YOU CAN’T. HERES ONE FOR YOU . ARE YOU AFRAID OF DEATH??

I’ve always wanted to die old. Something about having all the time in the world to explore all the simple things in life intrigues me.

SolarCloud said,

I don’t think it’s the chronology that matters, just the quality of life and the experiences that have been had. I would like to die before getting chronic illnesses, and I would like to die in a happy part of life, not a sad part. That’s all. No matter what age…
